Source recordBEIJING, Oct. 12 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese mainland and Taiwan belong to one and the same China, and this constitutes the real status quo in the Taiwan Strait, Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said on Monday. Mao made the remarks at a regular news briefing after Taiwan leader Lai Ching-te sought to solicit external support for "Taiwan independence" in a speech in Taipei on Saturday. No matter what Lai says or does, it can't change the historical and legal fact that Taiwan belongs to China, nor can it alter the doomed failure of "Taiwan independence," still less can it stop the overwhelming trend that China will ultimately be reunified, she said. The so-called democracy touted by Lai cannot disguise his separatist agenda, she noted. Taiwan's return to China is an important part of the victorious outcomes of World War II and the post-war international order, the spokesperson said.
