1935年5月，红军长征陆续进入西昌城北礼州镇。敌人编造谣言抹黑红军，很多不明真相的群众纷纷逃走。在田坝村，家境殷实的边家，只留下边玉昆守着大院。边玉昆看到的红军与以往到来的军队完全不同。他们打富济贫、开仓放粮，个个待人和气、纪律严明。住在边家北边卧室的，是一位爱吃辣椒的“大个子红军”。他每天伏案工作到很晚，有时候，他到院子里抽烟，还会和边玉昆亲切地拉家常。红军离开礼州那晚，边玉昆特地准备了几串辣椒和一捆草烟，作为礼物送给“大个子红军”。他推辞不过，只好收下。第二天一早，边玉昆起床后发现，“大个子红军”在他用过的桌子上，留下了一枚银元。后来，边玉昆看到一张画像，才知道在家里住了几天的“大个子红军”，应该是毛泽东！边玉昆将这枚银元贴身收藏了15年，才郑重传给孙子边仕光，并再三叮嘱：“这枚银元是毛主席留下来的，是咱家的‘传家宝’。” 多年来，边仕光将这枚银元视作珍宝。那段家族与红军相关的故事，如今被红军长征礼州会议陈列馆记载展示，也在长征路上经久流传，融入红色历史。
